Patriotic Tie Dye Cupcakes.

post-4Looking for the perfect dessert for that Fourth of July party? You’ve come to the right place my friends! If you’re worried about having to make 3 different batters, don’t, because you only have to make 1! You only have to separate the batters then add colors! So simple! :)

postpost-7Of course no patriotic cupcake can go without red, white, and blue sprinkles! I used my favorite vanilla cupcake recipe yet again for these cupcakes it’s just so good!

Making these cupcakes is so simple you won’t even believe it!

You start by creaming butter and sugar together until the mixture is light and fluffy, then you will add eggs and vanilla extract. In another bowl you’re going to sift the dry ingredients together then add them to the butter mixture alternating with some milk. Mix until combined. You do not want to overmix your batter! Once mixed, you’ll add some oil. Why add more oil? Because it adds that perfect amount of moistness! Now comes the not so tricky part…you’re going to divide the batter into three bowls just leave ⅓ in the mixing bowl–no need for a new one! You will now add a few drops of red food coloring to one bowl, blue to another, and leave one plain. Just whisk in the color adding more until you’re happy with it. Keep in mind that you want the colors to be really bright because they will lose some vibrancy as they bake. Now spoon the batter into muffin tins lined with cupcake liners. I layered my batter, but you can also do more of a marble or tie dye style. Just make sure you don’t mix the colors together. Bake the cupcakes until a toothpick comes out clean.

To make the simple American style buttercream you just beat some butter until smooth then add some sifted powdered sugar, heavy cream, and vanilla extract, adjusting the amount of sugar and heavy cream ’til you have the consistency you like.

Patriotic Vanilla Cupcakes.

Cook Time: 22 minutes

Total Time: 37 minutes

Yield: 15 cupcakes

Ingredients

    For the cupcakes
  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, soft
  • 1 cup + 2 Tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs, room temperature
  • ¼ cup Greek yogurt (plain or vanilla)
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ¼ cup veggie oil (or melted coconut oil)
  • red and blue food coloring
  • For the frosting
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, soft
  • 3 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 3 Tablespoons heavy cream
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Instructions

To make the cupcakes

Preheat oven to 350F and line a muffin tin(s) with cupcake liners; set aside.

In a large bowl with a handheld mixer (or in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment) cream the butter and sugar together, add the eggs (one at a time), and beat until combined. Add the vanilla extract and yogurt and beat until combined; set aside.

In a medium bowl combine all of the dry ingredients. Slowly add the wet ingredients alternating with the milk and beat until combined (do not overmix). Fold in the oil then divide the batter into three bowls. Add a few drops of the red food coloring to one bowl and blue to another (adding more until you’re happy with the color) and leave the white alone. Be careful not to overmix the batter as you’re adding the colors. Spoon the batter into the prepared muffin tins layering the colors (not mixing). Fill the tins ¾ of the way full. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-22 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow to cool completely before frosting.

To make the frosting

In a large bowl or stand mixer on high speed beat the butter until smooth and creamy. On low speed. Add the powdered sugar, heavy cream, and vanilla then turn up the speed and beat until you have a nice smooth and airy frosting. Add more powdered sugar or cream, if needed. Scoop into a piping bag, if you’re using one.

Frost the cupcakes as desired. Top with some patriotic sprinkles if desired.

    These cupcakes look so pretty & delicious! I will definitely be trying these! Maybe with your chocolate icing… You know how much I’m obsessed with your chocolate frosting!
